Good morning!

I recently (2 months ago) purchased a 1996 P-reg 2.8 Auto V6 Galaxy from a mate with full service history and 88K miles. It recently blew a water pipe (attached between heater matrix and inlet manifold) which was replaced by my local Ford dealer. They also told me that due to the amount of oil in the water (its a lot ;)() they think the head-gasket has gone and that they recommend that a replacement engine is fitted because of the mileage!!!

After reading some post on this forum, I've read about the 'common' oil-cooler malfunction - could this possible be the case with my car?

All comments gratefully received because I'm just about to scrap it! :D

88k is still being run in as far as i know!Mine is on 56, other peeps have over 100k on theirs... :D

as for the oil bit...no idea...I would also go back to your mate and see if he would help out. :D

Welcome to the forum. ;)

A good rule of thumb is not to be believe any diagnosis a Ford dealer gives, the Galaxy is a mystery to most of them. Even if the head gasket has gone why can it not be replaced ? At 88K the bottom end of the engine should be good for another 100K and pulling the head off will give the oppotunity sort out any troubles that may be developing upstairs. An independent VW specialist would be a better bet as the VR6 engine is fitted across the VW range. It would also be worth looking on VW specific websites (eg for the Golf) for more info on VR6 specific problems.

Bypass the cooler, see if any oil drips out of it when the coolant system is bypassed, if there is then the cooler is busted. Change the cooler, flush the cooling system and see if the oil in the water comes back.

If it does, have a test done for exhaust gas in the water.
